In June Mrs. Dana Jones Academic STEM Coach at Mableton was kind enough to visit us here at Austell and provided some guidance and training in the STEM philosophy and Instruction. Fun was had by all!
Our very own Mrs. O'Brien lead a session about how to use technology effectively so that students are using technology as an educational tool. Students are technology masters. Now it is our job to teach them how to use technology the most effective way possible for themselves!
Our third STEM session is underway and off to a great start. We heard from PK Graff, the keynote speaker. His presentation opened our eyes to viewing our classrooms in a new way. One major thing he spoke about is the hashtag above, #FailBetter. Failing is an option, quitting is not. We will all be exploring this statement back at Austell in our classrooms!
The Austell STEM team has met with Dr. Bynes and Mrs. Johnson to start developing our ideas and goals for STEM in our school. We discussed how to incorporate STEM into our different subject areas. Lots of brainstorming and lots of amazing ideas!Ms. Custred, Mrs. Sullivan, Mrs. O'Brien, Mrs. Van Matre and Mrs. Sutherland attended a session learning about who and how to partner with people to explore STEM unites. We need partners to learn from, explore with and help us gain knowledge with future STEM units.
Ms. Grigdesby, Ms. Custred, and Mr. Lee enjoyed spending time with Ms. Belcher and problem solving an authentic city lighting activity. We created our power plant, placed our lampposts in our city based on the provided criteria and constraints, and hooked it up.
Eureka! We had light! Mrs. O'Brien, Mrs. Jaji and Mrs. Van Matre attended a session where they learned about and downloaded several new apps to use in class. They are looking forward to creating STEM challenges and incorporating iPads into the challenges!
Our team spent an exciting day at CCSD's first STEM Innovation Academy collaborating with educators across the county.
